5. Removal from waste status

5.1 Directive 2008/98/EC

Framework Directive 2008/98/EC on waste sets out the major orientations of waste management policy and sets out the hierarchy of waste treatment methods to be implemented in the policies of the various Member States.

In order to encourage waste recovery, the directive opens up the possibility, in certain specific cases, of waste ceasing to be waste. It lays the foundations for a regulatory process that can enable waste to be removed from waste status.
