At present, the race for speed that began a good ten years ago for all-digital technology is dominated by CCD cameras with on-site storage for the "mega-fast" part, in excess of one million images per second. For more conventional cameras with CMOS sensors, the trend is towards speeds of 30,000 fps, with cameras equipped with "large" pixels (> 20 µm) or even covered with microlenses (figure 18 ).
