6. Memory management

Selecting the sensor architecture provides the user with a recording medium suited to his needs. Maximum frame rates can be selected, depending on the spatial resolution required. The images generated by the sensor are then transferred for storage in memory. Two types of memory are used in high-speed imaging: internal memory storage and external memory storage after transfer of the image area to an external storage medium. The amount of information to be transferred is directly proportional to the number of bits per pixel, the number of pixels per image... and the number of images per second. Some manufacturers speak in Mpix/s or Gpix/s, and the transfer speed is then obtained by multiplying this value by the weight of the pixel in bytes (1 byte = 8 bits; o in French, B in English).
