4. Comparing the performance of infrared matrix detectors
As we saw in the previous paragraphs, there are many different types of infrared detectors, which may differ in terms of the physical principle governing detection, the materials used, or the conditions of use. Performance can also vary from one type of detector to another. To make an informed choice, the infrared camera designer needs to be able to compare these performances. In this section, we present the characteristic parameters and merit functions commonly used, and presented in particular in manufacturers' data sheets. In each case, we begin with a general description valid for all fields, and then go on to explain the specific features of quantum detectors, on the one hand, and thermal detectors, on the other. Finally, we stress the precautions to be taken and the pitfalls to be avoided.
