1. Background information

1.1 A few definitions

First of all, it is worth recalling a few definitions commonly used by the international community, which can be found in various IAEA glossaries:

  • nuclear safety" refers to all technical and organizational measures relating to the design, construction, operation, shutdown and decommissioning of nuclear facilities, as well as to the transport of radioactive materials, taken with a view to preventing accidents or limiting their effects;
