3.1 Designing an isolator on a production line

In the food industry, the isolator is still an emerging technology, at a stage of development similar to that of the pharmaceutical industry in the early 1990s. Experience gained during the technology's expansion on production lines for the pharmaceutical industry, and more recently in the food sector, has highlighted a number of points to consider when designing the equipment. The approach described by Meyer [31] for pharmaceutical applications can be broadly transposed to the agri-food sector.
