1. History

The L2TP protocol was developed by Microsoft and Cisco Systems, who, recognizing the respective advantages of their tunneling solutions, worked to create a new protocol combining the best of the two protocols PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunnel Protocol, from Microsoft) and L2F (Layer Two Forwarding, from Cisco). It is from these two protocols, briefly presented in this section, that the L2TP tunneling protocol was born.
