2. Terminology

The L2TP protocol builds on the PPTP and L2F protocols, using a vocabulary similar to that of these two protocols, but with a few differences. Understanding the terms used for L2TP is therefore very important and necessary for understanding the protocol.

2.1 L2TP Access Concentrator

The L2TP access concentrator, or LAC, is the end device of the L2TP tunnel that interfaces with the remote user. In other words, it receives PPP packets from the user, encapsulates them and sends them through the tunnel to the other end (the LNS); similarly, it receives encapsulated packets from the LNS through the tunnel, removes the encapsulation and sends them to the remote user (figure 2...
