With GPRS and the introduction of packet mode, a new era in data transmission over a mobile network has opened up, and new applications have emerged, such as the transmission of digital photographs or access to e-mail. The latter does not require a particularly high transmission rate unless the user wants to receive attachments, files which can exceed one megabyte in size. In this case, as when consulting pages on the Internet, GPRS on a traditional GSM network shows its limitations.
