The storage of electrical energy for grid needs has existed since the 1930s. Built in 1933, the Lac Noir pumped-storage power station (STEP) was the first in France. These STEPs were developed mainly from the 1970s-1980s, to accompany the development of nuclear power (France, Germany, Spain, Italy).
