At homeostasis, the vaginal mucosa is covered with a complex flora, the majority of which are lactobacilli. Unique among primates , lactobacilli are the main defence against genital infections. Although lactobacillus-based probiotics have been marketed in the past, they are no longer authorized for marketing (as they are classified as medical devices), and attention is now turning to postbiotics, especially as the main active agents in lactobacilli are known
