ABSTRACT

Printing processes contribute to giving an attractive aspect to packaging. However, finishing techniques such as ennobling or decorating allow for the differentiation studied and sought for by marketing services. The design of the structure and visual effects such as varnishing, laminating and embossing are essential parts of packaging design. The design of the structure such as its form, folding and protection can also contribute to highlighting the graphic effect by enhancing the functional and practical aspect of packaging as well as their solidity. Therefore when a printed product comes out of the printing machine it is often far from being finished.

 INTRODUCTION

Even if printing processes contribute to the attractiveness of packaging, finishing techniques such as :

  • completion ;

  • ennobling ;

  • decoration... provide the differentiation sought by marketing departments.

When a printed product comes off the press, it's sometimes far from finished!

Designing a packaging means taking a close look at the design of the surface in order to achieve visual effects by modifying the front and/or back of the printed product.

The design of the structure can also help to "reinforce" a graphic effect, by focusing on the functional, practical and sturdy aspects of the packaging. (For example: shape, folding, protection).

With 18 years' experience as graphics coordinator for two major food industry packaging production and printing companies, Bernard Petit, a "graphics chain consultant", provides training, coaching and technical seminars for a wide range of organizations.
