Understanding the physico-chemical properties is important for the screening and design of systems that could replace the "traditional" MMH/NTO diergolic system. As mentioned above, the properties of ILs can be adjusted by the choice of cation and anion. The most common cations for EILs are shown in figures 3 , 4 and 5 . Note that some C atoms in the ring are replaced by N atoms, as nitrogen species generally have higher combustion enthalpies than carbon species.
