1.1 Hydrological context

With a surface area of 164,420 km 2 , Tunisia has rainwater resources estimated at 36 km 3 /year. Total water resources (blue water) are estimated at 4.85 km 3 /year, of which 2.7 km 3 /year is average runoff. The remainder, 2.15 km 3 /year, is underground runoff, from which withdrawals were estimated at 2 km 3 in 2010, representing an exploitation rate of 93%. However, this national average conceals major regional disparities, and many aquifer systems are subject to severe overexploitation....
