4. Non-conventional resources

The direct use of salt water, the desalination of brackish and sea water, and the recycling of treated wastewater (TWW) offer significant opportunities, and significant progress has already been made in these fields. However, environmental, economic and technological problems currently limit the massive use of these resources, which represent realistic alternatives to the problem of water scarcity.

4.1 Reuse of treated wastewater

Treated wastewater is mainly reused for irrigation, with the development of irrigated perimeters, and for watering golf courses in tourist areas.
