5. Water-related threats and risk management

Threats and risks arise from natural hazards that cause extreme situations, as well as from man-made actions related to water management methods. Controlling these problems requires an approach that makes risk an integral part of management, and calls for improved risk analysis and assessment tools, as well as improved control and intervention methods and resources.

5.1 Overexploitation of groundwater

Groundwater has been over-exploited over the last forty years, leading to the depletion of reserves in many aquifers.
