Overview
FrançaisABSTRACT
Connected objects are more and more common in our environment. They display a broad variety, and use different communication mechanisms, carry different types and volumes of data, are active permanently or on demand, often or seldom connected: so many scenarii that telecom operators study carefully to adapt their network to this growing and unpredictable traffic. Initially, cellular networks such as 2.5G, 3G and 4G were used as-is, and shared with mobile phones and tablets. But increasingly, as traffic grows and new usage patterns emerge, new technologies are being introduced. This article gives a review of the different existing standards, and upcoming ones such as 5G.

INTRODUCTION
M2M (Machine to Machine), also known as Machine Type Communication (MTC) in 3GPP, can be seen as the first generation of connected objects. As opposed to H2H (Human to Human), which in telecoms is associated with mobile and smartphone communications, for example, M2M is characterized by a number of different scenarios relating to health, security, transport, industry, etc., potentially involving a large number of machines or objects, low cost and energy consumption issues, and data exchanges that are sometimes sporadic and of very low volume.
