3. Implementation
Farmed salmon production generally takes place over a period of 2 to 3 years, depending on the target weight. The first three stages (fertilization, hatchery and rearing) are critical in terms of health . The salmon's performance is constantly being improved, so that the spawners pass on to their offspring an increase in growth rate and a decline in sexual maturity. This maturation can be modified by using triploid (sterile) salmon or, in land-based farms, by adjusting the duration of lighting.
