11.1 Tumors

Tumors are neoformed tissue masses resulting from excessive cell multiplication, with a tendency to persist and grow steadily.

Synonym: neoplasm, neoplasia.

A tumor can arise from any type of cell in the body that has retained the ability to divide.

The tumor cell escapes the laws of tissue homeostasis (loss of contact inhibition) and exhibits autonomous, indefinite growth.
