3. Sizing

As with all rail vehicles (whether powered or towed), combustion engine traction is dimensioned according to two major criteria: mass and overall dimensions [TRP 3 070] .

3.1 Weight and dimensions

The axle weight (e.g. 15 t, 22.5 t, 32 t) imposed by the track and permissible speed determines the number of axles and bogies on the vehicle. Examples include :

  • the BoBoBo locomotive, 15 t per axle for a total mass of 90 t ;

  • the CoCo locomotive, 32 t per axle for a total weight of 192 t.
