11. Other preferred chemical structures

Some structural motifs are only found in a single therapeutic class, and are the vectors of a very specific pharmacological activity. This is the case for several families of antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, local anesthetics, bone resorption inhibitors, calcium antagonists and alkylating antitumor agents.

11.1 Beta-lactams, quinolones and aminoglycosides with antibiotic activity

  • Beta-lactams are antibiotic substances with a β-lactam nucleus (figure 23 ), grouped into two families: penicillins and cephalosporins.
