1.1.1 Presence of liquid water under the insulation system

The prerequisite for lagging corrosion to occur is the presence of liquid water in contact with the metal surface, over a sufficient period of time for the effects of corrosion to manifest themselves. The arrival of liquid water in contact with lagged metal walls generally requires a leak in the insulation system.
