 INTRODUCTION

A reactor is any apparatus used to carry out a chemical or biochemical reaction, i.e. to transform molecular species into other molecular species. However, this term is restricted to cases where the transformation (or conversion) is carried out with the aim of producing one or more specific chemical species, or eliminating one or more compounds from a mixture. On the other hand, this definition excludes systems which carry out a chemical reaction for other purposes, such as energy production.
