Thesaurus development standards and manuals rarely address the details of operations and the practical organization of day-to-day work. Each organization develops its own procedures according to the resources at its disposal.
The development of a thesaurus involves the manipulation of a vast amount of textual data. Today, there is no thesaurus whose development and management are not, to varying degrees, computer-aided. The following options are available for data processing:
use of word-processing or spreadsheet software; thesaurus development is then described as "artisanal" or "manual";
use of integrated database management software capable of receiving and processing thesaurus data;
