1. Introduction

"A compiler is a computer program that transforms source code written in one programming language (the source language) into another computer language (the target language)." (source Wikipedia)

The usual use of a compiler is to render a program written in a source programming language (such as C) into a program executable by a specific processor and operating system. Figure 1 shows how this works.
