5. Compiler operation

A compiler includes various phases in which the program switches from one format to another. In these different phases and passes transform the program to analyze its properties and improve it.

In this section, we'll take as an example a C compiler that transforms a C program into an executable program.

5.1 Phases

The main phases of a C compiler are the major steps in the compilation process:

  • lexical analysis, which reads the program character by character and reconstructs "tokens"; the words in the language ;
