1. Emergence of SEM positions

In the early 1960s, the significant growth in electricity consumption led to a rethinking of the distribution of electrical energy in large conurbations. Thus, in France, the 245 kV voltage, which until then had been used exclusively for transmission, gradually became a voltage for direct supply to distribution networks, in large conurbations or in areas close to them (cf. ).

The voltage values given in this article are always the rated voltages of the equipment, as defined by standard 60694 of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC 60694); thus, the voltage of 245 kV corresponds to a network with a phase-to-phase operating voltage of 225 kV
