1. Purpose of testing

1.1 Relationship between testing and use

Functional analysis enables us to determine the stresses to which a mechanical part is subjected during operation, and the properties that the material used must possess to meet these stresses. Mechanical testing is then used to measure and assess these properties, by subjecting parts to stresses close to those to which they might be subjected during use. These tests are therefore essential for guaranteeing the reliability and safety of structures and equipment in the building and civil engineering sectors.
