2. Steelmaking

2.1 From iron ore to steel

To make steel, iron ore alone is not enough. In reality, there are three main raw materials involved in steel production:

  • iron ore ;

  • metallurgical coke ;

  • scrap metal.

Recycling accounts for a significant proportion of steelmaking inputs. Iron ore with added coke passes through a blast furnace to produce pig iron, from which steel is obtained.
