Steel; acier

A metal alloy composed mainly of iron and carbon, produced by the reduction of iron ore, scrap metal and metallurgical coke.

Iron age; Iron age

Historical period between 1200 and 600 B.C., during which the Hittites and Chalybes produced impure iron known as "fire iron".

Caucasus; Caucasus

Region in Asia Minor inhabited by the Hittites and Chalybes.

Cementite; cementite

Particle in cast iron formed by the combination of carbon and iron.

Chalumeaux; blowing tubes

Hollow rods through which air was blown to raise the temperature during iron production.
