6. Numeric designation (NF EN 10027-2 standard)
The numerical designation complements the symbolic designation. It is mandatory for steel grades defined in European standards, but optional for national steel grades or branded steels.
6.1 Steel number structure
It is defined :
by a number from 1 to 9 ;
1 for steel ;
2 to 9 for other materials ;
then by a steel group number depending on the type of steel, whether alloyed or not, its quality, analysis or strength;
a serial number (digits in brackets for possible future expansion).
Examples:
S235JR steel is equivalent to 1.0037...
