8. Importance of plasticizers and superplasticizers

Plasticizers and superplasticizers account for almost 70% of the additives used.

8.1 Plasticizers – Water reducers

They cause cement grains to deflocculate. This is because the attractive forces at the surface of cement grains tend to cause them to clump together in the form of flakes, trapping some of the water in the mix. They disperse the cement grains and release the trapped water, thus increasing fluidity. They increase concrete compactness by reducing mixing water. They also reduce the risk of concrete segregation (section 3.1.2
