The most common definition of sustainable development is "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Brundtland Commission – 1987). Put more simply, the challenge of sustainable development is to meet the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
