1. History of prevention
1.1 The birth of occupational risk
Occupational risk originated with work. At first, only injuries, falls and crushing were considered hazards. With the industrial revolution of the 19th century, new machines and techniques appeared, and the notion of occupational risk developed. The number and severity of accidents in the workplace made governments aware of the societal challenge of protecting workers' health, and therefore also their professional and private lives.
