4. Bioaugmentation
Bioaugmentation is the addition of micro-organisms to enable or enhance the biodegradation of a pollutant in soil or groundwater (figure 4 ). This technique is sometimes necessary, but is often applied without benefit. Bioaugmentation is only essential when the polluted environment contains no microorganisms capable of biodegradation.
