1. Introducing GTR
GTR comprises two issues
Leaflet 1 "General Principles", very useful for understanding the overall methodology;
Fascicule 2 "Technical appendices", the operational part of the document, containing tables of the technical elements required for project design and implementation.
The guide focuses on three aspects:
the establishment of a specific classification of materials to meet a pressing need in earthwork construction;
how the materials are to be used, depending on whether they are to be used for backfill or subgrade;
practical compaction procedures.
