1. Terminology
Given that the staircase, made up of steps where the foot rests without slipping, is already in place and designed as required for traffic, we need to remind you of the vocabulary that is essential for practitioners to understand. Each element of a staircase has a precise name, the purpose of which is shown on figure 1 . We won't list all the synonyms, nor all the old or less commonly used words still found in many books.
