ABSTRACT

The behavior of mixtures differs profoundly from that of pure substances, because pressure and temperature do not remain constant during changes of state. In this paper, we explain this phenomenon in the first part, and go on to provide examples of mixture charts where three types of cycle are represented. The third part deals with mixtures used in absorption cycles.

 INTRODUCTION

This article [BE 8 042] and the following one Thermodynamic diagrams – Wet mixtures and combustion [BE 8 043] follow on from the articles Thermodynamic diagrams – General [BE 8 040] and Thermodynamic diagrams – Pure fluids, azeotropes and ideal gases [BE 8 041] in which diagrams relating to pure bodies and azeotropic mixtures were presented. They deal with the diagrams used to represent the properties of the thermodynamic fluid mixtures most commonly used in the various fields of power engineering, with the exception of cryogenics, which is not covered here (see article [B 2 380] ). In all these articles, except for the one on combustion [BE 8 043] , the mixtures considered are non-reactive.

This article is divided into two parts corresponding to distinct fields of application:

  • the study of temperature-slip refrigerant diagrams, an extension, for vapour mixtures of fixed composition, of the diagrams presented in paragraph 1 of article [BE 8 041] ;

  • presentation of the diagrams used to analyze absorption cycles, with variable-composition mixtures of a sorbent and a coolant (in practice water-ammonia or lithium bromide-water).

Finally, with the permission of Presses de l'École des Mines de Paris, this article and the following one borrow extensively...
