 INTRODUCTION

Summary:

Although they are non-biodegradable, gold nanoparticles are the focus of much research into their use as imaging and/or therapeutic agents. This keen interest in biomedical applications of gold nanoparticles is due to an original combination of properties that depend on their composition, size and shape. By reviewing the general context of nanoparticle development, the physico-bio-chemical constraints of solid tumors and the main properties of gold nanoparticles, this article reviews and analyzes the various strategies being explored for the design of imaging and/or therapeutic agents based on gold nanoparticles.

Abstract:

Owing to the original properties of gold nanoparticles which depend on their composition, their size and their shape, an intense research activity is focused on their application as contrast agents for imaging and/or therapeutic agents. This article identifies and analyzes different strategies explored for designing such agents and their potential for biomedical applications.
