2. MAG welding: key parameters

History of MAG welding

MIG – MAG welding processes were developed during the Second World War, in particular to support the U.S. war effort following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Both processes were used to build warships, replacing the much longer riveting process. The MAG process (also known as Gas Metal Arc Welding, GMAW (cf. article by Roland Cazes [B 7 730] ) was designed to reduce the cost of welding thick materials. Its high efficiency soon made it the most popular process in the industry, to the point of becoming, according to the Canadian Welding Bureau, the most widely used process in the world. Welders have also highlighted its effectiveness for welding aluminum, thanks to its stripping action, which produces quality welds....
