2. Mechanical model

From a mechanical point of view, during self-pierce riveting, materials are subjected to high levels of elastoplastic deformation, damage and failure. In addition, contact (normal contact and friction) between the various objects plays an important role.

2.1 Elastoplastic materials in large deformations

The materials used (mainly steels and aluminium alloys) are subjected to large elastoplastic deformations during the process. Sensitivity to strain rate is sufficiently low to be neglected in a first approach, as is temperature dependence.
