7. Conclusion

Mastering bearing sizing is the key to optimizing their dimensions for a given application. The simplified hand-calculation approach presented here is a good way of mastering bearing design when optimizing service life or minimizing friction torque. It is based on static dimensioning, which consists in checking that the static load capacity is not exceeded, which is equivalent to verifying the bearings' resistance to Hertz pressure. To do this, an isostatic assembly must be considered. The distribution of forces and the calculation method differ according to whether the bearings are preloaded or not.
