6. Conclusions and outlook
In view of public and governmental eco-consciousness, biocatalyst control is gaining in importance, and a growing number of biocatalysts with industrial applications have emerged. Although there are no industrial applications as yet, artificial enzymes are proving to be one of the main tools of synthetic biology, as they appear to be essential for expanding the repertoire of chemical reactions accessible to the biological world, enabling the catalysis of abiotic reactions under ecological conditions. Driven by the importance of DA cycloadditions in chemical synthesis, chemists have employed several strategies for the preparation of artificial DAases. On the whole, fine achievements have been obtained with several examples of highly selective DAases, and even, in some cases, DAses providing the exo-disadvantaged product with almost complete stereoselectivity.
