1. General

Phages are a polyphyletic group of viruses that specifically infect bacteria and archaea. These viruses, formerly only recognized under the historical term bacteriophages, are also found in the literature under various names such as "prokaryote viruses", "bacterioviruses" depending on whether they infect bacteria, or "archaeoviruses" in the case of archaea.

For the sake of convenience and clarity, only the term "phages" will be used in this bibliography.
