2. Using phages in biotechnologies

Ever since their discovery by D'Hérelle, the biotechnological potential of phages has been anticipated and exploited. Over the course of a century, numerous biotechnological applications using phages have been developed. This dynamic has been continually reinforced, fuelled by the subsequent understanding of the biology and ecology of new phages isolated during successive bioprospections.

2.1 Phage typing

Phage typing is a discriminating method used to accurately determine the serotype of a contaminating, usually pathogenic, bacterial strain within a target species.

This epidemiological technique was developed at a time when current DNA primers did not yet exist
