
1. Preamble to the determination of phases
The elastic diffraction of X-rays by a crystal gives access to a function called electron density, which to a first approximation reflects a continuous distribution of electrons in the crystal lattice. In theory, this function is calculated for each point of relative coordinates (x, y, z) of a crystal lattice from the moduli and phases of each reflection hkl by the relation :
