7. Winding

Once cooled, the wire or cable must then be wound onto a spool (or reel) to facilitate storage and transport to further processing stages or to the end customer. The spool is characterized by the diameter of the barrel on which the wire or cable is wound, the outer diameter (of the flanges) giving the maximum winding diameter, and the winding width.

The part of the line performing this operation is called the winder. Its main function is to wind the cable around the reel, but the following auxiliary functions are also required:

  • regulation of coil speed as a function of line speed;

  • The wire or cable is deposited evenly across the width of the shaft;

  • spool changeover at constant line speed (especially for small wires produced at high speed).
