1. Synesthesia and sensory interactions
According to the Petit Larousse, synesthesia is "a subjective experience in which perceptions from one sensory modality are regularly accompanied by sensations from another modality, in the absence of stimulation from the latter".
In other words, in certain individuals, stimulation of one sense can trigger a response from another, unstimulated sense. This phenomenon was first demonstrated in 1871 by Gustave Th. Fechner, with 73 synesthetes experimenting with colored graphemes, the most extensively studied form of synesthesia . An illustration of this phenomenon is shown in figure
