ABSTRACT

Digital PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a way to cross the technological gap in detection and quantification of rare DNA sequences, such as mutations found in tumors. Detection of these rare sequences is of high importance for improving cancer patient care. Their detection in tumors or in biological fluids such as plasma or urine could allow the adaptation of treatment to the precise molecular characteristics of the tumor, and limit risks of recurrence, thereby increasing patient survival. After a brief introduction of the research described, this article first discusses cancer and its biomarkers, then follows with the emergence of digital PCR, and lastly explores the perspectives and potential evolution of digital PCR.
