3.1 Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
PCR has become the most widely used technique for detecting nucleic acid sequences. It involves the specific amplification of a known DNA sequence from a small number of starting copies, using specific primers and the enzyme polymerase. The known sequence is then amplified exponentially (figure 2 ).
